New Drink Driving Laws Soon To Be Announced

By Clare Westwood

Recently it has been announced that motorists should be subject to much stricter rules when it comes to drink drive limits. The latest recommendation have been released to coincide with the decision making of whether or not the legal drink limit should be cut by around half of what it currently is.

The Association of British Drivers has come forward stating that the plans are 'unnecessary' and that they are based on 'flawed evidence' which will only result in penalising responsible drivers. It is looking highly likely that the law will be changed though.

The review of the current drink driving laws has pointed towards the legal limit needing to be cut from 80mg per 100 ml to 50 mg per 100ml. The enquiry was launched in the aim of showing the government that the current laws are not adequate.

British Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has now opposed the recommendations and suggests that a 'one pint and your banned' rule will come into play which will have a knock on effect on the rural economy.

Similar opinions have been expressed by other experts "If the limit is lowered, people who drank the night before and are perfectly able to drive the following morning would be deemed over the limit. We would be punishing sensible and responsible drivers."

The majority of people who cause fatal car accidents are very far over the drink drive limit which suggests that lowering the limit would not make much of a difference where saving lives is concerned. Experts have concluded that these types of drivers are not going to change their driving habits just because the legal limit has been moved to one pint or less.

Drivers often find it difficult to make judgements on what the 'safe' limit to drink is and therefore the best advice possible is simply never to drink and drive. Being careful the morning after you have been out drinking is also important as you can still remain over the limit the morning after.
