Grammy awards organizers Drop Awards Category from 109 to 78

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 11:06 AM PDT

In a major Grammys overhaul designed to reduce the bloated structure of the music industry's top awards, organizers said on Wednesday they would slash the number of categories to 78 from 109 for next year's ceremony.

Many existing categories will be merged, while some will be dropped outright with contenders from different musical genres required to compete in new, all-purpose categories.
The top awards -- album, record and song of the year, and best new artist -- will remain untouched.
Among the changes, the separate awards for male and female vocal performance will now be combined into a new pop solo performance category.
Similarly a new award, rock performance, replaces the separate awards for rock solo vocal performance and rock performance by a duo or group with vocals.
The two metal and hard rock categories have also been merged.
In the pop, rock and country fields, the prizes for instrumental performance have been dropped.
The contemporary R&B album award has also been dropped, and contenders will be moved into the existing award for R&B album.
The R&B field suffered one of the biggest cuts, with the number of awards halved to four. The three R&B vocal performance awards for males, females and groups have been merged into a single R&B performance award.
Rap escaped relatively unscathed, with the number of awards cut to four from five with the merging of the solo and group performance races into a simple rap performance category.
In a move likely to draw howls of protest, the awards for Hawaiian, Native American and Zydeco or Cajun albums have been dropped. In their place is a new category, regional roots music album.
Grammy officials said the restructuring evolved from a "comprehensive evaluation" that was launched in 2009.
In another change, a category will be cut for the awards year if it receives fewer than 25 submissions during the eligibility process. If this continues for three consecutive years, the category will be dropped permanently.
If a category receives between 25 and 39 entries, only three recordings would receive nominations that year. Usually each category has five nominees.
The Grammy Awards usually take place in February. A date for the 54th edition has not yet been announced.

This weekend, winners of all three editions of MTN Project Fame West Africa will head to Accra, Ghana, to participate in the 2011 edition of the popular Ghana Music Awards.

Iyanya (2008 winner), Mike Anyasodo (2009 winner) and Chidinma Ekile (2010 winner) will depart Lagos on Friday, as they make their first group trip to Ghana.
Sources say all three acts will participate in different ways in the awards ceremony organised by CharterHouse Ghana.

'It's part of the plans to expose and empower our talents' a spokesperson for the show's producers says.
Since wining PF in 2008, Iyanya has been to the New York Fashion Week, he has performed across the length and breadth of Nigeria; and collaborated with several top acts. Mike is enjoying the benefits of his debut; and has won many awards – including a Best Video prize from Soundcity Music Video Awards; while Chidinma, the current winner, has been busy recording and working with her management to deliver her debut album.
The trip to Ghana, according to Iyanya, is not just to attend the awards. 'We're happy to be spending time together, as one family. And we also may take this time to hit the studios and do something together'.

The group will also spend some time with past PFWA Ghanaian finalists Nii, Kojo and Kesse.
The Ghana Music Awards, according to the artistes' minders, is not the only event the trio will attend as a group this year. 'Many more major events are coming. And the idea is that we make sure our best talents are there to represent Nigeria. These acts are our music ambassadors…'

Ghana Music Awards holds on Saturday April 9 at the Conference Centre (The Dome). Nigerian nominees include Asa and Wande Coal.
