Short Movie Review Of Deadfall Trail

By Dean Frazier

Starring an impressing cast of young budding actors, Deadfall Trail is one of the year's best psychodrama/horror movie that moviegoers have been impatiently waiting for Hollywood to deliver. However, this is an independent movie, not a Hollywood creation. It was directed by Roze, and stars Shane Dean, Slade Hall, and Cavin Gray Schneider in the lead roles.

Along with his title of director, Roze also wore the hat of writer and producer of this film. The film is very much like the blockbuster horror flick, Deliverance. Its profane amount of graphic images, like bug eating and urine drinking, along with the nudity, violence, and profanity all lend to its well deserving R-rating.

The story starts with the three main characters, Paul, John, and Julian going the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona for a three week trip that is supposed to be focused on survival. This no frills and no fun trip requires that the three participants only travel with one bottle of drinking water, a single garbage bag, and a hunting knife. Their survival during the three week trip will be determined solely by their instincts, their wits, their strength, and each guy's ability to live off of the land.

The personalities of the three young men immediately emerge at the beginning of the trip which is the beginning of the movie. Paul has never experienced anything like this and is the most inexperienced of the group. Julian is bothered by this. He has done similar trips with John and the idea of a new person on the trip does not appeal to him. John has done hikes and survival trips before and begins to show signs of being the leader of the group. He is confident that both of his friends will be able to handle the tasks set forth.

The start of the trip goes just as planned. Despite his lack of experience, Paul is very confident in his own abilities and often puts the group of young men in awkward and potentially dangerous situations. However, they are not so serious that the group cannot handle them. Even so, Julian's anger and irritation towards Paul increases while John tries to keep the peace and help everyone remain calm.

Paul has only agreed to risk his life on a three week survival hike in the desert for one reason. That reason is a small cactus plant called peyote. When ingested, the effects of the plant resemble psychedelic drug. It also makes a person thirsty. Because they only have three bottles of water, Julian and John urge Paul to wait to take the drug until they can find a better water source. Paul does not heed his friends' advice.

This would not be a horror flick if everything went totally fine. Of course, crazy bad things start to happen to the boys after they take the peyote. The film really begins to pick up the intensity and pace as the characters begin to capture the audience's attention. This film will have views wondering if any of the three boys will survive the strange adventure and if so, who it will be.

Even as an independent movie, Deadfall Trail is actually really good. There are a certain criteria that would deem it to be a great classic horror movie and unfortunately, it does not meet those standards. However, the script is well written and enjoyable, the actors do their jobs wells, and the characters develop nicely throughout the movie. It is a film worth seeing, especially by teenagers and young adults. This is a perfect flick for movie night in any household.
