New Southafrican Movie trailer- Oscar nominee,Life Above all Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:57 AM PDT Chanda, 12 years old, learns of a rumor that spreads like wildfire through her small, dust-ridden village near Johannesburg. It destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. Sensing that the gossip stems from prejudice and superstition, Chanda leaves home and school in search of her mother and the truth. 'Life, Above All' is an emotional and universal drama about a young girl (stunningly performed by first-time-actress Khomotso Manyaka) who fights the fear and shame that have poisoned her community. The film captures the enduring strength of loyalty and a courage powered by the heart. Directed by South African filmmaker Oliver Schmitz ("Mapantsula", "Paris, je t´aime"), it is based on the international award winning and best-selling novel "Chanda's Secrets" by Allan Stratton. Posted: 31 Mar 2011 07:57 AM PDT I had a chat with a couple of friends recently and I told them that John McCain didn't win the November 4, 2008 US presidential elections because he wasn't a good man or had the best intentions but because young Americans had set a certain standard curriculum vitae for what their next president should be. But at whatever cost, any candidate with the name George W. Bush should not bother applying. Same also for whoever is affiliated or related to that name. It's like what we have in some Nigerian companies launching a bonanza and saying their staffs with their family members are totally out of it. The man John McCain, a war hero and United States of America republican senator, lost the election because he couldn't send a text message. For this, Americans said they needed a 21st century president. That means someone who knows a little about Bluetooth, ipods and basketball. For this reason, Barack Obama flawed John McCain because he was always with his phone; calling and texting. He gave the Queen Elizabeth of England an ipod as a gift during his G-20 visit. And in basketball? Let's not even go near Barack because we'll be humiliated by the scores. But these were not the only reasons. Young Americans felt age was a crucial factor. In other words, the younger the president is, the closer he is to the problems and challenges of the middle class. Then also they looked at policies, intelligence and the many other things the candidate was offering. Again, John lost in all fronts. Had John won in Nov. 4, 2008, he would've been the oldest (at 72) US President elected for a first term (Ronald Reagan was older (73) when he was re-elected in 1984). On problems and challenges, the world was in the heat of the financial crisis. People were losing their homes. John McCain was asked how many houses he had and he responded "I think — I'll have my staff get to you". He was uncertain. How can you be uncertain of the number of houses you own? Americans queried. That means they're more than 5. Politico analysis later in the day found McCain's family owns at least eight properties, according to property and tax records, as well as interviews. (Source: Politico.com). On policies and what he would do for the American people? Of course the number one thing is always tax cuts. And that was the only thing, every other thing the world saw was open attacks on the character of Barack Obama which he (Obama) had predicted on the evening he gave his democratic victory speech. Accessing Barack showed he was definitely younger and exactly what young Americans wanted. He owned a single family home in Illinois. I remember Chris Rock on Larry King Live saying "Obama has one house and cares about losing it, McCain has 12, he can lose 5 and he'll be all-right." On policies, Barack stayed the course of telling Americans how he intended to get them off the financial crisis. He touched on employment, industry, and healthcare. He was all over the place. He campaigned from door-to-door, street-to-street, and used the internet and facebook like no other politician in the world has ever done. Above all, the 47 year old African American of Kenyan roots had a unique way with words. He would speak and connect. People felt his words in the most unusual ways. And this is the most basic foundation for every great leader: The Skill of Communication. Now, let's come back to Nigeria where people talk anyhow. People talk anyhow and are not even ashamed of what they say sometimes. If you can't speak or don't know what to say, why don't you just keep quiet. Or better still get an interpreter like Alhaji Galadima samari, vice presidential candidate of United National Party for Development (UNDP) did. A typical example was a presidential candidate in the 2004 debates where he said he would steal the formula for nuclear weapons so that Nigeria would own one. He also said he would send bags of beans and rice to troubled African countries and the beans and rice would be thrown down from the helicopter with the people chanting "Baba god has sent us food". Well, this is 2011 and young Nigerians are awake like never before. Nigerians appreciate good things, For example, many Nigerians in Diaspora were not able to watch the Nigeria/Ethiopia qualifier match, but a fellow Nigerian recorded the sports news at night with his camera phone and posted on youtube. We watched the fuzzy, shaky and ultimately unclear visuals with joy. We saw the long ranged shot that was a goal and thought it was Pius Ikedia that scored. A closer look revealed Ikechukwu Uche. Infact the uploader missed the first goal because he was trying to turn on his camera phone. Yet over 1000 people visited the link to celebrate the super eagles 4-0 dismantling of the Ethiopian side. So, let me cut to the chase quickly. My fellow young Nigerians, I have specifically addressed this article to you. Barack Obama was voted by young people. His dream of a better America was born in Springfield Illinois. This dream was driven by young Americans. My brothers and sisters, the wind of change has found its way to Africa. Tunisia and Egypt have decided. Libya is deciding. Though our cases may not be the exact same thing but our common humanity is bound by a common desire for a better life. In April, let us keep our sentiments aside and do what is right. WE MUST VOTE A CANDIDATE who feels the pain of the boy and girl who sell pure water on the streets of Lagos just to pay their school fees. We must vote a candidate who feels the pain of the boy in the north who's sacrificed his education and life to guide the blind and sick people in begging for money. We must vote a candidate who knows that the 9pm NTA news soundtrack is both boring and annoying as such must be changed. Same also for the logo, it's called branding. We must vote someone who knows that creating new universities is not the solution to the problem of our education. The solution is to buy paints and hire painters to paint the buildings and change their looks. The solution is to provide electricity. The solution is to provide computers. The solution is to adjust the curriculum to suit a 21st century academic setting. The solution is to make teaching attractive so that the many Nigerians in Diaspora can lend a helping hand while those 1980s lecturers are relieved to become consultants because many of them still teach same 1980 topics. We must vote someone who does not need 8 years to solve the problem of electricity. We must vote that candidate who will send a strong warning to any country that abuses the power and value of our green passport. Any disrespect on any Nigerian would warrant severing bilateral ties. Fellow young Nigerians, leadership is the most crucial element in development and in 2011 we must not gamble. We need a president who drinks water, and understands it's important for it to run in every Nigerian home. We need a president who understands that security is a basic element in every society. We need a president who will tackle unemployment by becoming creative. For example, having a television station on the internet will provide jobs. Once you do that, you'll have companies advertising. You'll also need some staff to market and sell the television station. Another means of employment. In building and construction, Nigeria has an advantage in cheap labor. Get the price of cement down and employ cheap labor from Abakaliki and start building. We need a leader who has a heart for healthcare. A strategic president who is willing to tap into the many talents Nigeria has home and abroad to bring about such development as the world has never seen before. My people, I believe so far, we get the point. We need a president who looks at Nigeria and sees Nigeria. Not North, South, East or West. We need a president who does not need a second term to make his mark and stamp his feet in the sands of time. WE NEED A PRESIDENT who already has his plans on paper, not someone who's waiting to get into Aso Rock, weigh in on the damage or success and start thinking. NO. We need someone who's got his plans mapped out. Everything from day one, till the day he thanks us for the support given to him and bids us all farewell with his dignity, integrity and respect in maximum tact. This April, Go and Vote at all levels, for that candidate you are confident will turn a new page with a golden pen to re-write our Nigerian history. The elections will take place as follows: Saturday 2nd April 2011 National Assembly Elections Saturday 9th April 2011 Presidential Election Saturday 16th April 2011 State Governorship / House of Assembly Elections Dumebi D. Onuora Executive Vice President World Youth Network Against Crime (WYNAC) |
