Haitan Musician Martelly, 'Sweet Mickey,' Wins Haiti presidential Election

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 05:48 PM PDT

Wyclef and Martelly
Musician Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly scored a come-from-behind victory Monday in Haiti's presidential runoff.

According to preliminary results from last month's election showing he easily defeated a former first lady for the leadership of a country facing enormous challenges.Martelly, who has never held political office, received nearly 68 percent of the vote in the two-way race with Mirlande Manigat, electoral council spokesman Pierre Thibault said in an announcement that was immediately followed by noisy celebration in the Haitian capital.

Thousands of Martelly supporters poured into the streets of Port-au-Prince, carrying Martelly posters, climbing onto cars and cheering loudly. A huge crowd of singing and chanting supporters marched to his house.
The popular musician, a star of the Haitian genre known as compas, had trailed Manigat in the crowded first-round election in November. But his campaign gained momentum in the second round, with many voters seemingly enchanted with his lack of political experience in a country where the government has failed to provide basic services.

Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa, has been honoured by the editors of Thisday newspaper for his contribution to Nigerian arts and culture.

Nigerian-born Okosi, who heads up the African business operation of MTV Networks International's Emerging Markets division, was declared one of Thisday's 2011 "New Champions for an Enduring Culture".  The awards ceremony, now in its 16th year, recognises Nigerians who have played a key role in launching Nigeria onto the global stage through arts and culture.
Okosi received his award in Nigeria on Friday night from the former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the presence of guest of honour, President Bill Clinton.  Other recipients recognized at the same time include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (author), Chiwetel Ejiofor (actor) and Innocent Idibia a.k.a.2face (musician).
Okosi, 36, fulfilled a long-held dream by launching a dedicated MTV channel for Africa (MTV base) in 2005, followed by Nickelodeon Africa – a channel for African kids and parents - in 2008.  Under Okosi's stewardship, MTV Networks Africa has grown into a fully-fledged multi-platform network reaching more than 90 million viewers across Africa.
A champion of African youth-culture and music, Okosi achieved another personal and MTV milestone in 2008 by launching the MTV Africa Music Awards.
Dedicating the award to his parents, Okosi said: "My heartfelt thanks to Thisday's editors for selecting me for this great award - I am honoured to receive it and to stand in such illustrious company.  As a Nigerian I am proud to have played my part in putting Nigerian arts and culture on the global map.  My role at MTV Networks Africa has provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate my passion for promoting African youth and music culture and to show the world what Africa can offer.  I believe the future of our continent rests on its young people, and I will continue to champion their talent."

M-net's Big Brother Africa season six tagged BigBrother Amplified

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 05:31 AM PDT

BIG BROTHER AMPLIFIED...That's what M-Net is calling the new season of the hit super show which will kick off on DStv channel 198 on Sunday May 1.
Running 91 days and 24/7 with a dream grand prize of USD 200 000, the sixth season of Africa's biggest reality show will include more of the drama, the emotion, the excitement and the suspense that have made the series a firm fan favourite. And it's all going to be AMPLIFIED!
So says M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi who heads up the channel's initiatives across the continent. "By definition amplified means to increase the volume, to make louder, to make more powerful. And that's exactly what we want to do with season six. To take the elements that audiences find so fantastic and present them in a refreshing new way while adding big surprises and entertaining twists. Amplified is such a well-known pop culture term and Big Brother has definitely become a pop culture success. So the name fits perfectly."

With a dramatic new eye, etched in a carbon fibre background with an edgy, futuristic feeling and with a sophisticated polished reflective finish, the newly unveiled show logo sets the scene for a bold new season!

With the deadline for entries now closed and the next phase of selection now well under way to choose housemates from the 14 participating countries (Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe), BIG BROTHER AMPLIFIED is on track to launch in little over a month!

"We received an unprecedented amount of entries this year," says Alabi. "It's been truly phenomenal, with almost 7000 written entries received from across the continent and countless more people attending the 'last chance' open auditions. We've had people from all walks of life from very different backgrounds with completely different aspirations …all take this one opportunity to enter Big Brother. It's really heartening to see that if anything, the show is going from strength to strength."

Created and produced for M-Net by Endemol South Africa, the series will once again be hosted by charismatic IK Osakioduwa, who has been at the heart of the action since he joined the show two seasons ago. With a brand new house also under construction, it's a matter of weeks before BIG BROTHER AMPLIFIED hits DStv screens!
