How To Choose Home Office Furniture

By Rob Leashing

If you work from home, it's extra important that you have an area of your home that you can really see as an office. It should be equipped with office furniture and preferably be a separate space from others in the home. Even a walk in closet can work for an office, though if necessary, a corner of your bedroom may be transformed, as well. The point is, you need to distinguish the area from the rest of the house.

Office furniture is very important when creating a home work space. You'll want to make sure that your space is comfortable and conducive to work. That means very carefully selecting the items you want.

Often, price is an issue. You need to have a budget that you can stick to or it is very easy to go overboard. Furniture can be expensive if you aren't careful, so take the time to work out a budget before you head to the store. This will keep you from spending too much. You can also find great deals online.

This is the fun part, looking for the perfect items to fit your office. You'll want to look for affordable, so you may opt for second hand items. This is fine, you can get some great deals for second hand furniture and often the desks and bookshelves will be built even better than the more modern ones.

Your chair, however, is one area that cannot be skimped on. You'll be sitting in it for hours at a time, so it really needs to be in great condition, preferably new. Look for the chairs that are designed for heavier people. The average computer chair only holds up to 200 lbs and tends to wear out fast, even if you weigh less than this. Stick to high end chairs. Even if you spend the majority of your office budget on the chair, it is well worth it.

You also want an ergonomically correct chair that will support your weight and help you sit properly. This eases back pains and potential problems in the future. Adjustable chairs are best since you will be able to change them to suit your stature, desk height, etc.

A desk should have drawers to store your paperwork and office supplies in, as well as plenty of space on top for your work, computer, etc. Check that the height works for you, as well and that it is deep enough for your legs. This will be more important for those with long legs.

Everything else is gravy once you have a desk and chair. You might also want to pick up a bookshelf that has space for all your books, or a filing cabinet if you need to file lots of paperwork. What types of furniture you choose will depend greatly on the type of work you do and what you need.

Office furniture makes a big difference in your work space. When you are looking to be productive, it really can help to have a defined office space where you will go to work, away from the distractions in the rest of the house. Having the right furniture will help you feel like you're going to work, too.
