A Houston locksmith is a professional person who deals with the designing of a safe and secure locking system.

The locksmiths must have skills suitable for this profession, good hand and eye co-ordination as well as good vision and hearing, patience, mathematical skills, agility, health, mechanical skills, stamina, honesty, trustworthiness. They need good communication skills, reliable transport, safety skills and be up to date on all new ideas and developments. They must also have skills in welding, drilling, carpentry and so forth.

They also need to be computer literate to be able to use programs which make the codes for specialists type keys. They also need to have knowledge on how to install electronic and digital lock systems and be able to service them. They can work from a shop or a mobile vehicle repairing and installing security systems. A Locksmith needs to be mobile so that if a door is unable to be unlocked they can open it fast and efficiently.

They can have a shop and work from there, or be a mobile technician and work out of a vehicle, installing security systems and repairing them. When called upon to open a door which cannot be unlocked they need to be mobile so they can do the job.

Some of them specialize in certain areas and become experts in that field.

A Locksmith needs a license and needs an awareness of the laws governing the profession as well as their legal rights when unusual circumstances arise to change a lock. They need a code of honesty. A Police Certificate must be granted before applying for an apprenticeship. Their clients business must be strictly confidential.
