The Atlanta Braves move forward towards the National League East division title, performing well overall. Infielder Martin Prado has injured his hand in a recent game against the Cincinnati Reds. He will remain on the disabled list until August 16.
Prado stated that his finger got stuck in a small hole in the dirt beside the home plate when he dove head first. While the X-rays were inconclusive, the tests on Saturday found the small fracture, and it was decided it would not require surgery. A "stable avulsion fracture", when some tendon separates from the bone, is painful, "I felt it" Prado said. "It was not normal pain."
To his credit, his injury was not for nothing, his dive scored in Jason Heyward's two run double. He has had a good season and was batting .315 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI, and leading the team with 138 hits and 75 runs scored. It will however hamper his ability to have a 200 hit season, having already reached 100 hits in the second fewest games in Braves history, in his 69th game. The current record for the Braves is held by Ralph Garr, who got his 100 hits in 62 games back in 1974.
He has other impressive statistics, like the fact that he currently leads in the National League with 138 hits and is ranking 3rd in batting with a solid .315 average and he is also leading the majors with 44 multi hit games. He has a career high of 13 homers. Perhaps though he is most celebrated for standing a bat on end in 2007 after hitting, dropping the bat and running for first base, to the amazement of attending fans.
Being called up from the Triple-A Gwinnett, Diory Hernandez will be an active infielder to assist during Prado's absence. Hernandez will probably spot start and pinch hit in the near future as All Star Omar Infante replaces Prado as the active infielder. Omar is a dynamic asset for Atlanta, he has also started as third base, shortstop and outfielder this season.
Even though Hernandez struck out recently against Johan Santana of the Mets, he is a suitable replacement. When playing for the parent club last year he batted a .319 average. Just before the call to the majors, he had a 17 RBI in 30 games.
Prado commented that "The most important games are coming up and I want to be a part of it." Bobby Cox the current Manager of the team is optimistic saying "If he [Prado] was only going to be out a couple of days, we could wait, but I don't think it would be good if he's going to be out for like 10 days." The injury was a hot topic this week on websites and sport betting organizations.
