Singapore Restaurant Serves The Best Of Western Cuisine

By Angela Foster

Western food is most of the time referred to as European or American style cuisine, but to some extent, it also refers to the non-indigenous foods of other countries, such as Australia. So don't wonder if people readily think of burgers, fries, steaks, ribs, and sausages when Western food is discussed.

Can't tell between Western and Eastern cooking? Both have differing characteristics that can be attributed to their differing cultures. First, they differ in serving size. Western food means humongous sizes; most probably because Caucasians are bigger in body built compared to Asians and thus need more food intake. In contrast, meal portions of Asians are relatively smaller, as their body size is.

In Western cooking, meat is also used in huge quantities. If in Asian cooking, meat is only an ingredient of the meal, in Western cooking, meat is the main star. Think of steaks. Juicy and thick slabs of tender meat are the main star of the meal. There are other players on the plate, such as mashed potato and steamed vegetables, but the meat is the only reason why the plate is readied in the first place.

In Western food, rice is considered just a side dish. Much like how corn on the cob, fries, steamed veggies, and mashed potatoes are regarded. If in Asian food, a complete meal that doesn't include noodles must involve rice, that isn't true in Western cooking. Rice is even coloured some of the time.

One thing that is present in both Western and Asian cooking is the use of spices. These are condiments and seasonings that add more flavour to the meal. Catsup, mustard, gravy, sauces, soy sauce, fish sauce, hot sauce, garlic paste, peanut sauce among others are just same examples of both Western and Asian seasonings that are used to liven up the meal's flavours.

In Singapore, Western foods are now everywhere unlike before. Fast food restos serving Western meals are now easy to come by. Western foods are also typically available in hawker centres, or al fresco dining establishments that house food stalls, so you can have access to a burger or fries should you crave for them.

What's great about dining out these days is that both Western and Eastern methods of cooking are vastly available mainly because Westerners seem to have fallen in love with Asian food and vice-versa. This joining of tastes has encouraged more restos to present both kinds of food. Thus, where west meets east, there can surely be found a satisfying eat.
