| Egyptian Court Upholds Actor Adel Imam's Sentence for Insulting Islam Posted: 26 Apr 2012 11:42 AM PDT  A court in Egypt has upheld the three-month prison sentence given to comic actor Adel Imam . Adel Imam, the Arab world's most famous comic actor, had a conviction and three-month prison sentence for insulting Islam in his films and plays overturned on appeal Imam, 71, had poked fun at officials in his comedies and politicians of all colors during a 40-year career, although he was publicly criticized by many Egyptians for failing to back protests against former President Hosni Mubarak. . The 71-year-old was initially found guilty in absentia in February in a case brought by an Islamist lawyer, A misdemeanor court has overruled the verdict handed down in February against Imam, citing the "absence of a crime", Imam was also fined $170 (£105) by the court in the capital, Cairo. Imam's lawyer confirmed he would appeal against the verdict, which he said was "given on the wrong legal basis". "My client's films were certified, not censored, by surveillance authorities before their release to the public," Sawat Hussein told Reuters. Van narrated the incident to Hitz FM ghana " "I need to really get it clear that I was not arrested," what i did was to purchase some stage blank gun props from the US which were to be delivered to me in Nigeria because i was there at that time" . He continued , "a few minutes after boarding a flight bound for Ghana with the gun props following due security checks at the airport", he was asked by some officers to come down and identify his bags. "I was told that there was need for State Security Service (SSS) to approve of the props. My trip was then declined by the senior officers so i had to stay for the declaration on the guns and also a cross-check to establish they were just stage guns". He said he was in the offices of the SSS for a long time. "I was with them for a very long time and then eventually we went to the SSS offices in Ikoyi but because it was really late I had to stay with them overnight and the next day processes were made for me to leave and also certify that the guns were just props," he said. "i contacted my wife and uche jombo to let them know what was happening in Ghana and Nigeria" "I was just in the process of leaving, I was not being kept for a crime or detained by any police, Uche came to the SSS office and we left the premises." Van made it known that he was never arrested or detained at the police station, adding that the process has been completed, he has his stage blank gun props with him and he is back in Ghana to prepare for his next movie shoot and other projects in Malawi. Contrary to reports that he could not make it to the AMA awards because of the incident ,he explained he didn't plan to attend the ceremony due to the fact that he was on set of a movie .  | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Carlina Duran,the woman who was recently named Miss Dominican Republic has lost her crown due to the discovery that she was married. The rules state that those vying for the crown must be single. But Magaly Febles, director of the Miss Domincan Republic contest, said Tuesday it had been discovered that recent winner Carlina Duran was married in 2009. Duran said in a statement read at a Wednesday night news conference that she had never lived with her husband. "In my daily life, I remained like a single woman, without thinking of myself neither materially nor spiritually married," said the statement, read by her lawyer. The statement also said the marriage was brief, and the couple had begun annulment proceedings. The statement didn't specify whether the annulment was finalized. Duran's statement called her decision to hide her marriage from the contest organizers the "fruit of my inexperience." Febles officially handed the crown to first runner-up, 24-year-old Dulcita Lieggi, at the news conference. The 25-year-old Duran was crowned Miss Dominican Republic on April 17,2012 and was to represent her country at the Miss Universe contest.
