Do Your Own Gas Grill Maintenance At Home And Save Money - 5 Easy Tips

By Mark Hester

Your gas grill is more than just a cooking utensil -- it's a big part to your family's summer fun. And the less time you have to spend worrying about your grill, the more time you will have to spend with your family and friends. So keeping it running good and hot will not only save you money -- but also make your grilling experiences, family outings and friendly cookouts much more enjoyable and less bother.

Here are 5 easy to do tips to keep your grill in tip top cooking condition:

1. Clean your burners before the first grilling of the season and as needed throughout the year. To clean -- remove the burners and use a wire brush to clean the exterior of the burner. This will remove excessive residue and any loose rust. Clean out the clogged up gas holes with a paper clip. Check you venturi tubes for possible blockages by insects and clean with a venturi brush or bent coat hanger.

2. Clean grates are a must for good grilling. Clean the cooking grids easily by covering them with a layer of aluminum foil and running the grill on high for 10 to 15 minutes. The baked-on food will burn to a fine white powder which can be easily brushed away.

3. When your lava rocks get saturated with bbq drippings and grease, change them out. Do this at least once a year. Better yet switch to ceramic or porcelain briquettes which are less porous and can be cleaned by turning them over and heating.

4. Rub a light coating of vegetable oil on the outside of you grill (when it is cool) with a paper towel to protect it from the weather.

5. Remove the BBQ and other drippings from your gas supply hose with a mixture of ammonia and water. This will discourage squirrels, and other critters, from chewing and damaging the gas supply hose from your tank
