Getting Your Home Ready For A New Pet

By Mark Walters

Bringing a pet home is exciting. But, before you go out and pick up your new family member, make sure you first take the steps necessary to prepare your home. This will help you to have the best possible experience with your new pet from day one. There are several important things to consider before bringing your new dog or new cat home.

If you have other pets, the arrival of a new cat or dog can be stressful. Your animals love you and worry that the new animal will result in less attention. This can result in jealously, anger and even fighting. If you are bringing a new animal to your home and you have other pets, make certain that you prepare in advance for the situation. You want to keep the new cat or dog and the older ones separate for a little while. This can help the new pet to become accustomed to your home in a comfortable manner. Introduce the animals slowly. During the first few weeks, all interactions between the new pet and you older ones should be closely monitored. Make sure you also take the time to pay attention to your older pets. They will be more accepting of the new animal if they see that you will still pay attention to them.

In a new environment, even a housebroken animal will have accidents. If you have a new puppy or kitten, the situation will likely be even worse. Prepare for accidents in advance since you know they are bound to happen. Buy a strong cleaner. Enzyme cleaners tend to work best since they remove all traces of pet odor. Remember that your pets have a stronger sense of smell than you. Any traces of smell can result in more accidents. Also remove any expensive rugs from the floor until the new pet is fully trained.

Your new pet may feel uncomfortable in your home. After all, it is unfamiliar. Take special steps to ensure that they will feel welcome. Purchase a few toys and find them a warm and comfortable place to sleep. Have some treats on hand. It may take the new addition a little while to acclimate. Be patient and understanding as they get used to their new surroundings.

These tips are just a few of the important considerations that you will want to remember when welcoming a new cat or dog into your home. It can be a great time for you to bond with your new addition. By taking the time to prepare, you will have a great opportunity to enjoy your new pet with your family.
