The 3D Animation Work That A Video Game Designer Does

By Cody Landon

A video game artist is primarily responsible for creating and animating the graphics that are based on a given script put together by the actual designer of the game. So he or she must be able to translate the script into realistic scenarios and characters and these calls for a high level of structured thinking, artistic talent, a craving for fun and excitement and plenty of imagination.

The gaming industry is very competitive and very lucrative and for this reason video game artists are able to create quite a reputation in cyberspace as their work. They have to be artists in the true sense but also ?technology savvy? as there is 100% computer based.

2D video game artists will most likely hold a degree in the Fine Arts and if not, they will be able to prove a very impressive portfolio of their natural talents. 2D artists tend to be a little more ?arty?. However this is a generalisation and while it does apply to 3D artists, those working in this mode also need to have in-depth knowledge and a lot of experience in computer modelling and 3D rendering. While they need to be artistic, that goes without saying; they can however make full use of software techniques to polish their artwork. Therefore, they can often get by on either a diploma or certificate 3D animation course from an acknowledged college or if not, they can rely on their hands on experience.

The video game artists can specialize, for instance he or she can concentrate solely on one aspect of the graphics such as backgrounds. A background artist will make sure that those playing the game are able to feel as though they are actually there ? they will for instance be able to bring a dungeon scene to life and immerse the player to the degree where they will feel as though they are actually there. Character video artists on the other hand are responsible for creating the characters in their full glory. When you consider how often the characters of video games become famous icons who are emulated by thousands of players, it is easy to see why their creators can become legends themselves.

A video game is purported to be one of the most visual of all 3D animated mediums on the market today. They are powerful and because of their virtual nature, allow players to interact with the characters and surroundings which is something viewers cannot do when watching a movie. For the length of the game, players live and play in this virtual world, it is a very powerful medium.

Video games are only possible because of the high calibre of artists involved in their creation; in fact you might even call them gifted. These are the people who are responsible for creating parallel worlds as well as the hundreds of characters and objects that reside there.
