Even though not everyone agrees that starting school or a learning daycare center at two or three years old is a great idea, many people are beginning to think so because it has been proven that children of this age often get a better head start when it comes to learning the basics. It seems they are more capable of learning and remembering things like the alphabet, numbers and colors than anyone ever gave them credit for and it seems that the earlier they start the learning process, the easier they have it in later school years.
Even though going off to preschool at these early ages might be what is academically best for a child, it might be difficult to get a toddler to see it this way. Most children this age have a very strong attachment to their parents and home and going off to a strange new place, even though there will be plenty of other children around, can often be a scary and difficult time for them. It is a transition that some toddlers make more smoothly than others that's for sure.
It can sometimes be a good idea, if possible, to take the child to their new school or daycare and let them visit for an hour or so prior to their first actual day. It might make them be more interested in the surroundings if they are aware that they will not have to be stating that first time. This might give you a good indication of what you could have in store when the actual drop off time comes. Let them meet their teacher and familiarize themselves with the buildings and try to make everything look and sound as interesting as possible.
For some young children it can be hard to learn to socialize and fit in. If they are not used to being around a lot of other kids, they might feel alone or displaced if they are used to getting most of the attention at home from the family. The trick is to help your child feel comfortable and as confident in themselves as you can before they enter their new school or daycare setting.
It is always fun for kids of any age to get their new school supplies. For a very young child, getting that first new backpack and lunch box can be very exciting. If you go to the trouble of having their name put on each of those items with monogramming or embroidery, it can make them feel very special and grown up. You want them to enjoy their first days at school even if they are very young because they have a lot more school years ahead of them and getting off to a great start is so important.
